Police Department Overview |
Eighteen sworn officers and 5 civilian employees provide protection for the citizens of Commerce. The department participates in the Hunt County Crime Stoppers program, vacation house watches, Operation ID, home security checks, crime prevention, residential burglar alarm response and a Neighborhood Watch Program.
The Department is divided into the following divisions:
The Administrative Division, under the direction of the Chief of Police, Kerry Crews and Assistant Chief of Police Steve Harrison, provides the support which enables the Department to function administratively. The areas of responsibility for this division are Budget, Purchasing, Personnel, Training, Records, Crime Prevention, Crime Stoppers and Special Operations. There are 2 commissioned officers in this division.
The Patrol Division is composed of the Uniformed Patrol Section. The Uniformed Patrol Section is the most visible of Department's organizational units. Officers assigned to this respond to calls for service. There are 12 commissioned officers assigned to this Division, and is under the direction of Lieutenant Terry Miller.
The Criminal Investigation Division is composed of 3 Criminal Investigations, which include Juvenile and Narcotics Investigations. There are three commissioned officers assigned to this Division. Detective Sergeant Chris Vaughan heads up this division.
The Support Services Division is essentially, the Communications Center. This Division employs 5 civilians who perform the duties as Communications Officers and Office Manager/Records Clerk. This Division receives all calls for service for the Police, Fire, and Emergency Service Departments.
The Records Division was established to be the central storehouse for all criminal records created by and for the Commerce Police Department and other divisions of the department. Its function is to maintain accurate, secure files which can be quickly retrieved for use by the Department, other law enforcement agencies and the general public.
The Warrants Division is a new division that was started in 2003. This division employs one commissioned police officer assigned to Municipal Court 3 days a week, and 2 days at the Police Department. The primary goal is to apprehend criminals wanted on outstanding warrants from our Municipal Court.
